Murray first time 2nd seed at Grand Slam

After Andy Murray has become the first Britain ever to hit number two in the world rankings, it would seem that the number one, Roger Federer, is looking to play down his rival's chances of success ahead of the US Open next month. In what might be taken as an effort at mind games, Federer has said "We all know Rafa (Nadal) was injured, so he couldn't put in the fight he wished to concerning the rankings." In other words, the true world number two was not even playing in order to accrue the rankings points needed to stay in second.

Federer would do well to remember, however, that when Nadal took time out to overcome injury the Spaniard was at number one spot in the rankings, the position since occupied by Federer after his record-breaking success at Wimbledon in July. We suppose Federer is only doing what all sportsmen do though, trying to psyche out a significant opponent.
